J. S. Bach’s Three Sonatas and Three Partitas for Solo Violin are universally regarded as the culmination of solo violin repertoire and a masterpiece of Western classical music. C. P. E. Bach once recalled a contemporary remark that “nothing more accomplished could be composed for becoming a good violinist.”

These six works encapsulate the full harmonic and polyphonic potential of the violin. In this revised edition (BA 5256), editor Peter Wollny presents a thoroughly updated musical text that reflects the latest research from the New Bach Edition – Revised (NBArev).

The edition draws primarily from Bach’s remarkably clear autograph manuscript, considered one of the most beautiful of his hand. It also includes evaluation of all known secondary sources: five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, as well as four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The new engraving preserves the page layout and pagination of the previous edition (BA 5116) for easy side-by-side comparison. A comprehensive preface in German and English provides rich insights into the origin, context, and source material of the Sonatas and Partitas.

Performance Note:
Essential repertoire for all serious violinists, these works are as technically demanding as they are emotionally profound, encompassing intricate fugues, graceful dances, and monumental structures.
