Johann Christian Bach (attrib.) : Concerto in C Minor for Cello and Piano
Edited and harmonized by Henri Casadesus – Salabert Edition SLB 5894
Description:
The Concerto in C Minor for cello and piano, first published in 1947 by Editions Salabert, was originally attributed to Johann Christian Bach and harmonized by Henri Casadesus. Later musicological research revealed that the work was not composed by J.C. Bach himself but rather written “in the style of Bach” some two centuries later. Despite this, the concerto has enjoyed great popularity, remaining a staple of the cello repertoire for performance and study.
This modern edition preserves the expressive qualities of the original publication, while providing an enriched preface and historical background in French, English, and Italian, making it both a performance and scholarly resource.
Performance Tips:
Cellists should focus on bringing out the classical phrasing and balance between lyrical expressiveness and technical clarity. Since the piece imitates the style of Bach, articulation, ornamentation, and rhythmic vitality should reflect the Baroque/Classical transition style. Pianists accompanying should maintain a transparent texture, supporting the cello’s melodic lines with elegance and clarity.
About the Composer / Attribution:
Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782), known as the “London Bach,” was the youngest son of J.S. Bach and an influential figure in the transition from the Baroque to the Classical style. Although this concerto was long attributed to him, later scholarship clarified its doubtful authenticity. Nevertheless, its stylistic qualities and historical connection through Henri Casadesus secured its place as a significant pedagogical and concert work for cellists.
Song List:
The work is performed as a complete concerto in three movements (fast–slow–fast).
(Please note: the unrelated titles “La Petite Fille Sage,” “Le Chien Perdu,” etc. listed in some catalogs are not part of this concerto and belong to a different publication.)
