Debussy:Ballad
Composer: Claude Debussy
Description
In autumn 1891, Debussy’s early piano piece Ballade slave was published by Choudens. When he had it re-engraved by Fromont in 1903 with slight revisions, he removed the word "slave," emphasizing its narrative character. Despite this, the work retains a noticeable Russian influence, a reflection of Debussy’s time spent with Nadeshda von Meck, where he occasionally served as her house pianist. The piece also echoes the style of Balakirev. Some unconventional harmonic choices in the Ballad foreshadow the compositional techniques Debussy later developed in Pour le Piano (1901).
Performance Notes
This piece requires a delicate balance between lyrical phrasing and the underlying rhythmic flow. Pianists should focus on tone color, nuanced pedaling, and dynamic contrasts to bring out the piece’s expressive depth and subtle Russian influences.
