Ulrich Michels: dtv-Atlas Musik (Single-volume special edition)
Description:
dtv-Atlas Music is a world-renowned music encyclopedia that offers a detailed overview of the theoretical foundations of music and a comprehensive account of music history, spanning from the earliest monuments of prehistory to both classical and popular music of the 20th century.
The volume includes 250 full-page color plates with graphic illustrations and a wealth of musical examples, enabling readers to understand musical structures at a glance. Designed as both a study resource and a reference work, it is an indispensable guide for anyone entering the world of music.
Foreword (German edition)
The aim of the Atlas of Music is to introduce the field of music knowledge and provide a concise overview of both the fundamentals and history of music within a limited space. Through numerous examples and illustrations, the book attempts to make the structures and aspects of music immediately clear.
The book is divided into two sections: systematic and historical. The historical section takes up the majority of the volume, and even the systematic part is permeated with historical context, since almost all phenomena in music have a historical background. The chronological classification of musical eras, as presented here, is just one of many possible choices; strict categorization or naming eras with general keywords can rarely reflect the full complexity of musical developments.
In each period, topics are classified mainly by genre and arranged as chronologically as possible (for example, Bach before Handel). However, in the 19th century section, classification by genre becomes problematic due to overlapping categories of content, scoring, and form, which take on new combinations. Thus, this system is no longer applied in the 20th century, though the principle of chronological presentation of composers is maintained.
For better clarity, the thematic units are designed, where possible, with one page of charts and one page of text. Musical notation (symbols, abbreviations, and performance directions) is standardized throughout, with explanations provided in a table on p. 10, since many of these terms may not be immediately understood by general readers.
To enhance its function as a reference, the Atlas of Music concludes with an index divided into persons and subjects.
Special thanks are due to Mr. Vogel of Titisee-Neustadt (1988), who collaborated harmoniously with the author in designing the charts; to Mr. Ernst Abromeit of Tübingen for his assistance with the musical examples; to Dr. Ruth Blue of Kassel for proofreading; and especially to the reviewers in Munich (Anna Coseriu, Elisabeth Guhl, Winfried Groth), who have continually updated this work.

Description:
