When Günter Henle founded his Urtext publishing house in 1948, the first work in the catalogue was the two-volume edition of all of Mozart’s piano sonatas. Even today, they still carry the catalogue numbers HN 1 and HN 2. Over the years, these volumes have been revised several times to ensure that the musical text reflects the most current scholarly research.

Autograph manuscripts survive for many of Mozart’s sonatas. In some cases, Mozart made changes between the manuscript and the printed editions. This edition includes both versions where applicable. The editor’s preface and critical commentary provide detailed information on sources and editorial decisions. A separate detailed commentary is available for free download on Henle’s website.
