Beethoven:Klaviersonate Nr. 14 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2 – Moonlight Sonata

Author: Ludwig van Beethoven

Description
Beethoven titled this work Sonata quasi una fantasia, yet the world knows it as the Moonlight Sonata, a name that emerged even during the composer’s lifetime. The evocative imagery surrounding the piece was reinforced by poet Ludwig Rellstab in 1823, who described the first movement as “The lake rests quiet under the light of the moon at twilight—the wave thuds against the dark bank.” Wilhelm von Lenz later wrote, “It is as if we catch sight of a colossal grave in the middle of a lonely plain, palely lit by the sickle moon.”

Recent research suggests that Beethoven may have been influenced by the sound of the Aeolian harp in crafting the sonata’s ethereal first movement. This edition includes insightful introductory texts by Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch, shedding light on these findings. The fingering is provided by Perahia, ensuring a highly practical edition for pianists.

Performance Notes
This Urtext edition presents a meticulously edited score based on the latest scholarly research. With detailed fingering by Murray Perahia and clear notation, it serves as an authoritative reference for both interpretation and performance. The Moonlight Sonata requires delicate touch, expressive control, and dynamic contrast, making it an engaging challenge for intermediate to advanced pianists.
