The opus number of Beethoven’s Easy Piano Sonatas, Op. 49, can be misleading. These sonatas were actually composed not long after his Sonatas, Op. 2 and, at least in part, before his Sonata, Op. 7. Sketches for these works appear in the Kafka Miscellany sketchbook, which Beethoven used for several years in Bonn and later in Vienna until the late 1790s. The second sonata (Op. 49, No. 2) appears to have been composed earlier than the first. Beethoven later adapted the second movement of Op. 49, No. 2, Tempo di Menuetto, for the Menuet in the Septet, Op. 20. This sonata is among Beethoven’s most well-known piano works and is frequently encountered by budding pianists early in their studies.

Performance Notes

These sonatas are often recommended for intermediate pianists due to their approachable technical demands and clear classical structure. However, their lyrical phrasing, expressive touch, and precise articulation require musical maturity. The Tempo di Menuetto should be played with elegance and a graceful dance-like quality, while the first movements of both sonatas benefit from careful dynamic shaping.
