Horn and Piano – Romantic Period
About Editor/Fingering:
This Urtext Edition is edited by Dominik Rahmer. The piano fingering is provided by Klaus Schilde. The edition is specifically prepared for Horn in F.
Description:
Similar to Schumann’s 'Concert Piece for four Horns' op. 86, Saint-Saëns’Morceau de Concert was composed to exploit the technical possibilities of the new valve-horn mechanism. The impulse came from the French horn player Henri Chaussier, who had developed a novel 'Cor omnitonique'. While Chaussier’s instrument did not gain wide acceptance, the Morceau de Concert became a staple of the repertoire. This popular one-movement work is technically demanding, but includes abridgements and ossias suggested by the composer to make the piece accessible to advanced pupils.
Features:
- Scholarly Urtext: A definitive edition based on the composer's original intentions and latest research.
- Instrumental Innovation: Historically linked to the development of the valve horn and the 'Cor omnitonique'.
- Flexible Difficulty: Includes ossia passages and simplifications provided by Saint-Saëns himself.
- Exam Standard: Formally recognized as a standard for high-level instrumental assessment.
Performance Tips/Difficulty:
The work is a significant technical challenge and is listed as a required piece for ABRSM: Horn Grade 8. Performers should take advantage of the ossia markings to tailor the difficulty to their current technical level. Focus on the Romantic lyricism and the virtuosic flourishes that define this French masterpiece.
