Saint-Saëns : Septuor for Trumpet, Piano, Two Violins, Viola, Violoncello, and Double Bass in E-flat Major, Op. 65 Part / Bärenreiter Urtext

Description

For many years, Camille Saint-Saëns resisted writing a chamber piece featuring the trumpet for his friend Émile Lemoine and his chamber music society La Trompette. He famously remarked, “I can happily write you a concerto for twenty-five guitars […] but for trumpet? Impossible.” However, in 1880, he composed the Préambule, and by 1881, he completed the full Septuor, a work for trumpet, two violins, viola, violoncello, double bass, and piano.

With its neo-baroque character and refined elegance, this piece became remarkably popular during Saint-Saëns’ lifetime, much to the composer’s surprise. The work is both playful and sophisticated, blending the brilliance of the trumpet with the warmth of the string ensemble and the richness of the piano.

Performance Notes

This Urtext edition, based on the corresponding volume Camille Saint-Saëns – Œuvres instrumentales complètes (BA10302-01), provides a scholarly and authoritative version of the score. The set includes individual parts for piano, trumpet in both E-flat and B-flat, and strings. Additional string parts are available to accommodate performances with multiple players per part, as was customary in Saint-Saëns’ era.
