Originally intended as part of Suite bergamasque (HN 381), along with L’Isle joyeuse (HN 386), Masques was ultimately published separately in September 1904. Debussy composed this work during a turbulent period in his life, having just left his first wife, Lilly, for Emma Bardac. Compared to L’Isle joyeuse, Masques carries a more restrained and enigmatic character. The Catalonian virtuoso Ricardo Viñes premiered both works, and they remain highly regarded in the piano repertoire.
