In 1884, Grieg composed this Baroque-style suite to celebrate the 200th birthday of Norwegian poet Ludvig Holberg. Inspired by the music of Holberg’s time, the suite features Baroque dance forms, including Präludium, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air, and Rigaudon. However, Grieg combines these traditional structures with the harmonic and melodic language of the 19th century, infused with his distinct Nordic style. This charming fusion of eras has contributed to the suite’s enduring popularity. Though widely known today in its string orchestra version, the work was originally written for solo piano. This Henle Urtext edition includes carefully prepared fingering to aid in navigating Grieg’s rich, often polyphonic textures.
