Chopin:Polonaise in F-sharp Minor, Op. 44
Composer: Frédéric Chopin
Description
On August 23, 1841, Chopin wrote to Viennese publisher Mechetti: “I currently have a manuscript available for you. It is a kind of fantasia in the form of a polonaise that I would call Polonaise.” This uncertainty about the title is understandable, as the Polonaise in F-sharp Minor, Op. 44 is one of Chopin’s most structurally innovative and dramatic compositions.
The piece begins with the grandeur of a traditional polonaise, yet it soon takes an unexpected turn with a relentless passage featuring over thirty repeated octaves—a section that sounds strikingly modern even today. This climactic passage then transitions into a contrasting mazurka, an ethereal and dreamlike moment that seems to emerge from another world. The interplay between these sections makes this polonaise a fascinating and unique work in Chopin’s repertoire.
Previously available only in Henle’s complete edition of Chopin’s Polonaises (HN 217), this revised standalone Urtext edition offers a meticulously researched score based on the latest scholarly findings.
Performance Notes
This polonaise demands both technical prowess and deep musical insight. The powerful opening requires strength and precision, while the octaves demand endurance and control. The mazurka section calls for a delicate and lyrical approach, requiring a contrast in touch and phrasing. The performer must balance the work’s dramatic contrasts while maintaining cohesion throughout.

作曲家: Frédéric Chopin(弗里德里克・蕭邦)
