Brahms:Sonatas, Scherzo, and Ballades
Composer: Johannes Brahms
Description
Johannes Brahms’s Piano Sonatas, Op. 1, 2, and 5 were among the first works published by the composer at the young age of 20. Written in 1852–1853, these sonatas already exhibit the depth and intensity that would define his later works. Interestingly, the Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Op. 2 was the first of the three to be completed, in November 1852, and holds a unique place in Brahms’s oeuvre.
The F Minor Sonata, Op. 5 was dedicated to Clara Schumann, and Robert Schumann himself was deeply moved by it, writing to Brahms, “Your second sonata, my friend, has brought me much closer to you.” These early sonatas, along with Brahms’s Scherzo in E-flat Minor, Op. 4 and Ballades, Op. 10, showcase his youthful passion and technical brilliance while already hinting at the structural mastery and harmonic depth of his later compositions.
This Henle Urtext edition presents these works in their most authentic form, with expert fingering suggestions by pianist Andreas Boyde, a recognized Brahms specialist.
Performance Notes
Brahms’s early piano sonatas are known for their grand symphonic textures, requiring strong dynamic control and a powerful yet sensitive touch. The Ballades demand a balance between narrative expressiveness and technical precision, while the Scherzo in E-flat Minor showcases Brahms’s dramatic intensity. Pianists should focus on the interplay between lyrical phrasing and structural clarity, essential to capturing the depth of these works.

作曲家: Johannes Brahms(約翰內斯・布拉姆斯)
