Johannes Brahms composed the Scherzo in E-flat Minor, Op. 4, in 1851 when he was not yet 20 years old. In 1853, Brahms performed the piece multiple times for Robert and Clara Schumann, possibly inspiring Schumann’s famous article Neue Bahnen (New Paths), in which he described Brahms’s piano works as “turbulent in spirit yet graceful in form.”

This edition presents the Scherzo in E-flat Minor as a standalone publication, previously available only in a larger volume. It has been newly revised according to the New Brahms Complete Edition and features updated fingerings by Andreas Boyde.
