Johannes Brahms was deeply inspired by the Scottish ballad Edward from J. G. Herder’s anthology Stimmen der Völker in Liedern. The melodies for the first of the Ballades, Op. 10, came to him effortlessly, as he once told a friend. These four dramatic and romantic musical tales were strongly linked to his memories of Clara Schumann. Julius Grimm, to whom the pieces were dedicated, even stated that “the Ballades are really for her.”

Robert Schumann highly praised this work by the young Brahms. This Urtext edition features scholarly revisions based on the soon-to-be-published Brahms Complete Edition and includes fingerings provided by the renowned pianist Lars Vogt.

Performance Notes
