Johannes Brahms’ Piano Sonata in C Major, Op. 1 was one of the first works published by the young composer at the age of 20. Written between 1852 and 1853, its slow movement is based on the folk song Verstohlen geht der Mond auf and is dated as early as April 1852. With this passionate and technically demanding sonata, Brahms introduced himself to the musical world, including the Schumanns in Düsseldorf. Clara Schumann later wrote, “The whole is full of exuberant fantasy, intimacy of expression, and mastery of form.” This Henle Urtext edition presents Op. 1 as a standalone volume, revised using the musical text from the Brahms Complete Edition. Future editions will include Sonatas Op. 2 and Op. 5.
