Brahms:Piano Pieces Op. 119
Johannes Brahms
Description
Johannes Brahms’ summer retreat in Bad Ischl in 1893 was highly productive. Alongside Op. 118, he composed his final cycle of piano pieces, Op. 119. Brahms described the opening piece in a letter to Clara Schumann, noting its abundance of dissonances and writing, “Every measure and every note must sound like a ritardando, as if one wanted to suck the melancholy out of each single one, with lust and pleasure out of the aforementioned dissonances!” Despite this expressive weight, Op. 119 offers a variety of moods: the third piece surprises with its bright and lighthearted C major character, while the cycle culminates in a bold and defiant Rhapsody in E-flat major. This revised edition, based on the Brahms Complete Edition, provides pianists with a fresh opportunity to explore the intricate and expressive world of Brahms’ late piano works.
Performance Notes
These pieces demand both technical control and deep musical sensitivity. Pianists should pay close attention to the nuanced phrasing, subtle rubato, and Brahms' characteristic harmonic richness. The expressive contrasts between the introspective Intermezzi and the dramatic final Rhapsody should be carefully balanced.
