Ludwig van Beethoven composed his five major piano concertos over a span of twenty-five years. The Second Concerto in B-flat major is presented here in a piano reduction. This edition, adhering to our customary Urtext quality, is arranged for practical use and based on the Beethoven Complete Edition, with Beethoven’s autograph serving as the primary source.

Beethoven likely drafted the first version of this concerto between 1786 and 1792—before his Piano Concerto No. 1—yet it was not published until December 1801, a few months after the first concerto. He frequently performed this concerto during his concert tours and made numerous modifications over time. These alterations left behind fascinating traces, which are thoroughly discussed by Beethoven scholar Hans-Werner Küthen in the preface and the section “About this Edition.”
