Beethoven:Eroica Variations, Op. 35
Author: Ludwig van Beethoven
Description
Composed in 1802, Beethoven’s Fifteen Variations and Fugue, Op. 35, commonly known as the Eroica Variations, derives its name from the fact that its theme was later used in the finale of his Third Symphony (Eroica). This work, along with Op. 34, marks a significant development in Beethoven’s variation form, introducing character variations, where each variation possesses its own distinct identity rather than serving as mere embellishments of the theme. Beethoven proudly emphasized to his publisher that both works were composed in an entirely new manner.
For the first time, the Eroica Variations are available as a standalone Urtext edition. The musical text is based on the later Critical Apparatus of the Beethoven Complete Edition, ensuring an authoritative and scholarly presentation. This edition includes a detailed foreword and commentary, offering valuable insights into the work’s history and structure. Fingering has been provided by the esteemed pianist Ian Fountain.
Performance Notes
This Urtext edition provides a carefully edited score that remains faithful to Beethoven’s original intentions. Ian Fountain’s fingerings assist in navigating the technical and expressive demands of the variations, making this an indispensable edition for pianists.
