Sonata No. 2 by Samuel Zyman is a sequel in name only to his acclaimed first flute sonata. Commissioned by Marisa Canales for the 2016 National Flute Association Convention, this 19-minute work challenges advanced performers with its dramatic contrasts. Across two expansive movements, slow and mysterious passages give way to fiery, folkloristic dances, showcasing both lyrical expressiveness and rhythmic intensity. Zyman’s distinct voice blends Latin American rhythmic vitality with contemporary harmonic language, resulting in a compelling recital piece.
