Beethoven : Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra in D major, Op. 61 (after the Violin Concerto)
Author: Ludwig van Beethoven
Description:
After attending the premiere of Beethoven’s stately Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Muzio Clementi approached the composer and requested a transcription for piano and orchestra. Beethoven fulfilled this request in 1807, providing not only an alternative version of the composition but also original cadenzas that he had not written for the Violin Concerto.
This version had long awaited a proper scholarly edition, and now, renowned Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar has finally completed this task. By examining all known sources, Del Mar presents Beethoven’s precise articulation, dynamics, and cadenzas in this authoritative edition. Additionally, for the first time, the meaning of Beethoven’s "Solo" and "Tutti" markings is fully clarified, offering valuable insight into the composer’s intentions.
This groundbreaking scholarly critical edition is an essential addition to the repertoire of every pianist, orchestra, and music library.
Performance Tips:
This edition includes an Urtext solo piano part as well as an additional piano part with fingering, making it highly suitable for both study and performance. The piano reduction is presented in a new format: as was customary in the 19th century, the solo piano part contains tutti passages, cues, and the piano solo. This part is embedded within the piano reduction, similar to string and wind concertos, allowing the soloist to benefit from practical page turns and the possibility of leading the ensemble from the piano. The piano reduction includes a reduction of the orchestral score with the solo piano part in smaller print above it.
About the Composer:
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was a German composer and pianist, considered one of the most influential musicians in Western classical music. His works, spanning from the late Classical period to early Romanticism, continue to shape musical traditions worldwide. His compositions, including symphonies, concertos, and sonatas, remain fundamental to the piano repertoire.
Arrangement Introduction:
This edition is based on Beethoven's own transcription of his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, for piano and orchestra. The transcription was made at the request of Muzio Clementi and includes Beethoven’s original cadenzas, providing a unique perspective on this concerto.
