Antonín Dvořák composed his String Quartet No. 11 in C Major, Op. 61 in the autumn of 1881. The piece was commissioned by Joseph Hellmesberger Sr., the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic and first violinist of the Hellmesberger Quartet. However, Hellmesberger never performed it in public, considering it a “weak work.” Instead, the Joachim Quartet premiered it a year later in Berlin.

Despite the initial reception, Dvořák himself regarded this quartet as one of his finest chamber music works. The composition exhibits a refined texture, drawing inspiration from Schubert’s Quintet in C Major and Brahms’s Sextet in G Major. It reflects Dvořák’s ambition to establish himself within the Viennese classical tradition, moving beyond the perception of him as merely a composer of Slavic folk melodies.

This Urtext edition is based on Simrock’s first published score, along with the autograph manuscript, first edition parts, and Dvořák’s four-hand piano arrangement. It also includes a facsimile of twelve discarded measures from his Violin Sonata Op. 57, which Dvořák repurposed and developed in the second movement of the quartet.
