This anthology brings together a unique collection of solo violin parts from J. S. Bach’s sacred vocal works, many of which have not traditionally been treated as core repertoire by violinists despite their high musical and technical value.

In his cantatas, passions, and masses, Bach frequently assigned solo violin parts—either alone or with a second violin—to elevate the expressive power of arias and chorales. These solos often demand both technical finesse and rhetorical sensitivity, calling on the violinist to reflect and amplify the emotional content of the vocal text.

This Urtext edition from the New Bach Edition (NBA) includes all necessary performance markings such as fingerings, bowings, and commentary. Movements that originally required two soloists include a second violin part, allowing for full performance capability. Additionally, the full vocal text for each piece is provided to help instrumentalists grasp the affective depth and interpretive intention of each selection.
