Friedrich Seitz – Student Concerto in G major op. 13 for Violin and Piano

Description:
Friedrich Seitz (1848–1918) was a renowned German violinist, concertmaster, and pedagogue. His Student Concerto in G major op. 13, composed in 1893, remains one of the most beloved and pedagogically effective student concertos of the 19th century.

This work is written entirely in first position, making it accessible to early-intermediate violinists. The concerto features three traditional movements:

  • Allegro non troppo – A charming and lyrical opening movement, straddling the line between concert music and salon style

  • Adagio – A sentimental slow movement in a minor key

  • Rondo (6/8) – A joyful and rhythmically vibrant finale

Despite the moderate technical demands, the piece mimics the gestures of a full virtuoso concerto and includes hallmarks like a cadenza, expressive melodies, and effective bowing patterns (détaché, legato, and elementary spiccato). The solo part includes fingering and bowing annotations by editor Kurt Sassmannshaus, who also provides a concise preface with performance tips.

Performance Tips:
This piece requires imaginative expression to bring out its salon charm. Pay special attention to phrasing in the Adagio and rhythmic accuracy in the Rondo. A great work for building stage confidence.

About the Composer:
Friedrich Seitz was a violinist and teacher based in Magdeburg and later Dessau. His teaching pieces were designed to give students the thrill of playing in a virtuosic style without excessive technical strain.
