Of the three so-called “Mannheim” flute quartets composed by Mozart, the Flute Quartet in D major, KV 285, is undoubtedly the most celebrated. Commissioned by the Dutch amateur flautist Ferdinand De Jean, this work presents a concertante style throughout. The flute takes on a soloistic role in each of the three movements: the virtuosic Allegro, the expressive central Adagio, and the spirited Rondeau. Although the autograph manuscript has been missing since 1945, the work remains an essential gem in the flute repertoire. This edition, arranged for flute and piano by Heinz Stolba, draws closely from existing sources, preserving Mozart’s sparse yet refined indications of dynamics and articulation.
