Completed in 1921, Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major, Op. 26, is among the most celebrated and frequently performed works in the 20th-century piano concerto repertoire. Based on sketches from 1913 and developed further in 1916–17, Prokofiev fully focused on this composition during his summer in Brittany in 1921. He famously remarked that all thematic materials were ready, save for a few elements in the finale and first movement. The work premiered in Chicago on December 16, 1921, with the composer at the piano and Frederick Stock conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Though initially met with mixed reactions, it gained wide acclaim following its 1922 Paris performance under Serge Koussevitzky.
