Claude Debussy (arr. Maurice Ravel): Nocturnes (for 2 Pianos)
Description:
In his *Nocturnes* for orchestra and women’s chorus (1897–1899), Claude Debussy pursued his vision of musical form evolving organically from the material itself. Though the tripartite structure alludes to the classical symphony, Debussy distanced himself from its motivic processes, focusing instead on nuance and timbre. The movement titles—“Nuages” (Clouds), “Fêtes” (Festivals), and “Sirènes” (Sirens)—evoke poetic images rather than literal tone-painting. In 1909, Maurice Ravel created a brilliant arrangement of this orchestral masterpiece for two pianos. He premiered the transcription with Louis Aubert in Paris in 1911. This Henle Urtext edition is the first scholarly-critical edition of the arrangement, edited by Debussy expert Denis Herlin, with fingerings by Andreas Groethuysen and editorial oversight by Peter Jost.
Performance Tips:
Performers must focus on transparent layering and sensitive pedaling to recreate the coloristic richness of Debussy’s orchestration. Ensemble coordination is critical in evoking the shifting textures and atmospheric moods of the original.
About the Editors:
This Urtext edition was overseen by editor Peter Jost, with a preface by Debussy authority Denis Herlin and fingering contributions from pianist Andreas Groethuysen. Their combined expertise ensures both historical authenticity and practical usability.
