Description :

Franz Schubert composed his middle-period piano sonatas between 1818 and 1825. These works include four completed sonatas and five unfinished ones. Among them, the Sonata in C major D 840 (“Reliquie”), the Sonata in A minor D 845 (published as the “Première Grande Sonate” in 1826), and the Sonata in D major D 850 marked major milestones in his development. H. G. Nägeli even remarked to Czerny, “I definitely count the piano composer Schubert among the good, even excellent ones.”

With the release of this volume, Bärenreiter completes its three-volume Urtext edition of Schubert’s piano sonatas. This volume includes a detailed Foreword discussing the genesis and sources, as well as performance practice notes (by Mario Aschauer) that address articulation, pedaling, ornamentation, and Schubert’s unique accent notation.

Additionally, the Critical Commentary offers insights into interpretive variants, and Schubert’s original sketches and sonata fragments are accessible via the Bärenreiter website.

Performance Tips :

This edition includes in-depth notes on performance practice in Schubert’s time, particularly addressing articulation, ornamentation, the use of pedal, and the interpretation of Schubert’s idiosyncratic accent markings.

About the Composer :

Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was an Austrian composer whose prolific output bridged the Classical and Romantic eras. Renowned for his Lieder, chamber music, and piano works, Schubert brought a deeply lyrical sensibility to his compositions. His piano sonatas showcase his evolving harmonic language and emotional depth.
