Composed in 1943 as a Sonata for Flute and Piano, Prokofiev’s Second Violin Sonata originated when violinist David Oistrakh expressed interest in a violin version. With Prokofiev’s agreement, the two reworked the solo part for violin, resulting in the premiere of the violin version in Moscow in 1946. The work quickly gained international attention, including an American edition edited by Joseph Szigeti.

This new Henle Urtext edition, edited by violinist and musicologist Viktoria Zora, is the first truly source-critical publication of the work. Drawing from extensive research in Russian and international archives, Zora has corrected numerous errors and ambiguities found in earlier editions.
