Paul Hindemith : Sonata II in G Major for Piano

Edition Schott – ED 2519

Description

Shortly after the publication of Wilhelm Furtwängler's article "Der Fall Hindemith" in the "Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" on November 25, 1934, Hindemith realized that his days in Germany were numbered. On February 13, 1935, he mentioned in a letter to Willy Strecker his plans to work in Turkey, the USA, or Basel. Although he intended to remain in Germany, he planned to give up his position at the Hochschule für Musik the following year.

Against this background, the three piano sonatas composed in 1936 can be understood as Hindemith’s need for introspection and as a kind of "compositional report." The importance Hindemith himself attached to them, and the seriousness with which he worked on them during his second stay in Turkey—amid exhausting practical and administrative responsibilities—confirm this. The first two sonatas were composed in quick succession. In a letter to Willy Strecker, Hindemith remarked: "Dear Willy, here you get the well-known sonata [referring to the 1st Sonata], and so that you don’t think senility is already approaching, I immediately made another one, just as an exercise. It is the lighter counterpart to the weighty first one."

Indeed, the 1st Sonata is more musically complex and gains additional significance from its connection to Hölderlin's poem "Der Main." By contrast, the 2nd Sonata is lighter in structure and almost didactic in conception. In the first movement, one is immediately struck by the long, lyrical melodic lines. This cantabile quality is characteristic of Hindemith’s style in the 1930s, as is the restrained pianissimo ending of the final movement, which reflects a profound inwardness often overlooked in Hindemith reception.

Edition Schott – ED 2519
