Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello solo are among the crown jewels of 18th-century solo string literature. From early on, these pieces have also been performed on the viola, a practice that remains immensely popular today.

The source situation is complex: Bach’s autographs are lost, and the surviving manuscripts differ in phrasing, bowing, and other details. While most viola transcriptions follow Anna Magdalena Bach’s copy, this edition instead takes into account the manuscripts by Johann Nikolaus Schober and an anonymous source linked to Johann Traeg, as these may represent Bach’s later thoughts on the Suites.

Editor Chung Park based his arrangement on a thorough study of Bärenreiter’s Urtext editions, offering a reliable transcription in a fine performing edition. He recommends violists to also consult the Cello Suites Urtext (BA05217 edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris & Bettina Schwemer, and BA05278 edited by Andrew Talle) for comparative readings and facsimiles.

This spacious modern engraving (31 × 24.3 cm) ensures excellent readability and practical page turns, making it ideal for both performance and study.

Performance Tips:

The edition provides two notations for Suite V and Suite VI: one in original tuning and one in transposed notation, allowing violists to choose the most practical approach for performance. This flexibility makes it especially suitable for both recital use and pedagogical purposes.

About the Arranger:

Chung Park is a conductor, violist, and educator trained at the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Miami. He studied viola in Hannover, Germany with Hatto Beyerle of the Alban Berg Quartet. Park has taught at several universities, including the University of Central Florida, Appalachian State University, and the University of Chicago. He has also given masterclasses across the United States. Since 2022, he has served as conductor of the St. Olaf Orchestra, Minnesota.

朴正（Chung Park）是指揮家、中提琴家與教育家，曾就讀於皮博迪音樂院與邁阿密大學，並於德國漢諾威師從阿爾班・貝爾格四重奏的中提琴家哈托・拜爾勒（Hatto Beyerle）。他曾任教於中央佛羅里達大學、阿帕拉契州立大學與芝加哥大學，並於全美各地舉辦大師班。2022年起，他出任明尼蘇達州聖奧拉夫學院管弦樂團的指揮。
