Johannes Brahms : Waltzes, Op. 39
Piano Duet (1 Piano, 4 Hands) – Romantic Period
Description:
In spring 1865 Brahms surprised his friends and acquaintances with 16 little waltzes for piano four-hands. He informed his friend, the well-known critic Eduard Hanslick, that his thoughts while writing them had been “of Vienna and its pretty girls”—which is also how they sound—light, cheerful, one is tempted to say “Schubertian”. They still enjoy great popularity today, also for home music-making. This revised G. Henle Urtext edition offers the scholarly musical text based on the parallel volume of the New Brahms Complete Edition. This edition replaces the earlier HN 67. If you don’t happen to have a piano duet partner on hand, Brahms himself arranged these waltzes for piano solo (published by G. Henle Publishers as HN 1286 and HN 1287).
Product Features:
- Authentic Viennese Charm: These waltzes are light, cheerful, and full of the charm of 19th-century Vienna, perfect for enjoyable ensemble playing.
- Scholarly Urtext Edition: The score provides the scholarly musical text based on the New Brahms Complete Edition, ensuring the highest level of accuracy.
- Expert Fingering: Includes fingerings by Andreas Groethuysen, a renowned specialist for the four-hand repertoire.
- Versatile Repertoire: The pieces are excellent for both teaching and home music-making, with varying levels of difficulty within the collection.
Performance Tips:
The charm of these waltzes lies in their graceful, flowing tempo and gentle rhythmic emphasis on the first beat of each measure. The duo should focus on a light, non-percussive touch, aiming for a transparent and elegant sound that evokes Viennese charm. While the pieces are technically accessible, careful attention must be paid to balancing the primo and secondo parts to maintain the delicate texture. The flexibility and musical insight provided by the editor's fingerings are invaluable for achieving a cohesive performance.
