Claude Debussy : Six Épigraphes antiques for Piano Four-hands
Piano Duet (1 Piano, 4 Hands) – Impressionism
Description:
Around 1900 Debussy composed 12 short pieces for two flutes, two harps and celesta as incidental music for the Chansons de Bilitis (recitation of ancient Greek poems by the courtesan Bilitis) by Pierre Louÿs. Although it was performed, the work was not published during Debussy's lifetime. The composer highly valued the work and returned to it in 1914, choosing six of the old pieces and reworking them into an important new cycle for piano four hands. At the same time he also completed a version for piano solo (HN 402). Debussy succeeded to transform the delicate incidental music into a colourful, sonorous piano setting in both versions. This G. Henle Urtext edition is edited by Ernst-Günter Heinemann with fingering by Andreas Groethuysen.
Product Features:
- Composer's Own Arrangement: The work is Debussy's own transcription of his incidental music, showcasing a unique and authoritative piano setting.
- Authoritative Urtext Edition: The score is based on meticulous source study, providing a faithful and reliable musical text for performers.
- Expert Fingering: Includes fingerings by Andreas Groethuysen, a renowned specialist in the piano duo field.
- Evocative and Colourful: The pieces successfully transform the delicate original scoring into a colourful, sonorous piano setting, perfect for Impressionist interpretation.
Performance Tips:
The key to performing these duets is achieving an ethereal and highly nuanced sound that maintains the atmosphere of the original chamber music. Duo pianists must use subtle pedaling and a delicate touch to create the "colourful, sonorous" effect characteristic of Debussy. Focus on rhythmic freedom (where appropriate) and a seamless blend of sound, allowing the music's ancient Greek and Orientalist imagery to emerge.
Contents:
- Pour invoquer Pan, dieu du vent d'été (To invoke Pan, god of the summer wind)
- Pour un tombeau sans nom (For a tomb without name)
- Pour que la nuit soit propice (So that the night may be propitious)
- Pour la danseuse aux crotales (For the dancer with cymbals)

- Pour invoquer Pan, dieu du vent d'été (為召喚夏風之神潘)
- Pour un tombeau sans nom (為一座無名墓)
- Pour que la nuit soit propice (願黑夜帶來好運)
- Pour la danseuse aux crotales (為打響板的舞者)
- Pour l'Egyptienne (為埃及女郎)
- Pour remercier la pluie au matin (為感謝清晨的雨)
