Robert Schumann : Pictures from the East (Bilder aus Osten), Op. 66
Piano Duet (1 Piano, 4 Hands) – Romantic Period
Description:
In 1849, Schumann published six Impromptus for piano four-hands with the title “Bilder aus Osten” (Pictures from the East). As can be seen from the preface of the first edition, Schumann was inspired by the “Maqama”—a genre of Arab rhymed prose by the medieval poet Hariri in the translation by Friedrich Rückert. Schumann likened the Maqama's protagonist, Abu Said, to the German character Till Eulenspiegel, explaining the pieces' “foreign character”. Even 150 years later, the *Pictures from the East*, with their nuanced use of a wide range of sound possibilities in the interplay of the four hands, have lost none of their charm. This G. Henle Urtext edition is edited by Christiane Strucken-Paland with fingering by Andreas Groethuysen.
Product Features:
- Evocative Orientalism: The pieces are inspired by the medieval Arab prose form Maqama, giving them a unique "foreign character" and color.
- Authoritative Urtext Edition: The score is based on meticulous source evaluation, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
- Expert Fingering: Includes fingerings by Andreas Groethuysen, a proven specialist for the four-hand repertoire, with attention paid to the special demands of four-hand playing.
- Charming and Nuanced: The duets are known for their nuanced use of sound possibilities, making them highly rewarding for collaborative performance.
Performance Tips:
Duo pianists should focus on capturing the work's narrative and subtle exotic flavor. The pieces require precise coordination to manage the quick, often light textures and the wide range of sound effects in the four-hand interplay. The performers must use sensitive dynamics and pedaling to convey the charm and poetry of the original Maqama inspiration, ensuring the sound is never heavy but always clear and balanced.
