Edvard Grieg : Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 13
Violin and Piano - Romantic Period
About Editor/Fingering/Bowing:
This Urtext Edition is edited by Ernst-Günter Heinemann and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg. The piano fingering is provided by Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, and the specialized fingering and bowing for the violin are contributed by Ernst Schliephake.
Description:
Of Grieg's three violin sonatas, the great C-minor Sonata op. 45 is the best known today. However, the two early sonatas are captivating in their joy to play and their fresh, youthful tone. Written in 1867, the G-major Violin Sonata op. 13 palpably draws on Grieg's enthusiasm for Norwegian folk music. The lively outer movements in particular take as their model the traditional 'jumping dance'. Aside from the second print edition of 1887 revised by Grieg himself, the autograph manuscript in Stockholm was also consulted for this edition, thus offering an optimally ascertained musical text.
Product Features:
- Authentic Sources: This edition consulted both the 1887 second print edition revised by the composer and the autograph manuscript in Stockholm.
- Dual String Parts: The volume includes both a marked string part with professional fingerings/bowings and an unmarked Urtext part.
- Folk Inspiration: The work reflects Grieg's deep interest in Norwegian folk music, particularly the traditional 'jumping dance'.
- Scholarly Urtext: Prepared by an experienced editorial team to ensure a definitive musical text.
Performance Tips:
This sonata is ranked at Difficulty 5 (medium). While it contains moments of great energy, it can also be played by advanced students due to technical demands that are somewhat lesser than the later C-minor Sonata. Performers should emphasize the 'fresh, youthful tone' and the rhythmic vitality of the folk-inspired sections. The fingerings provided by Ernst Schliephake offer professional solutions for the violinist, while the piano part is expertly handled by Steen-Nøkleberg.
