Joseph Haydn : Piano Trios, Volume I

Piano Trios – Classical Period

About Editor/Fingering :

  • Wolfgang Stockmeier (Editor) : A highly regarded German musicologist, professor, and composer who specialized extensively in the keyboard and chamber music of the Classical era.
Key Highlight : Conducted rigorous textual analysis of the historical source manuscripts to resolve ambiguities surrounding the bass instrumentation and its flexible execution.
  • Jörg Demus (Fingering Piano) : A legendary Austrian concert pianist and master interpreter of Classical keyboard repertoire.
Key Highlight : Designed highly intuitive and historically informed piano fingerings that reflect early Viennese fortepiano touch techniques and facilitate crystal-clear articulation.

Description :

In the Classical period, and well into the 19th century, piano trios were almost 'fashion accessories'. At the end of his life, Haydn could look back proudly at the 39 piano trios which he now left to posterity. Volume I contains the eleven early trios; some of them date from as far back as the 1760s, yet still form a unified group. Since the cello part, always loosely designated as 'basso' in the source, mostly tallies with the bass part, the pieces can also be performed by piano and violin alone, and are thus a valuable enrichment of the violin and piano duet genre.

Features :

  • Comprehensive Early Compendium : Gathers all 11 of Haydn's foundational early piano trios dating from the 1760s into a single authoritative volume.
  • Performance Versatility : Features historical source formatting where the cello line mirrors the bass, allowing these pieces to be dynamically performed as violin and piano duets.
  • Pristine Urtext Standard : Produced via meticulous musicological source text criticism to ensure absolute authenticity free from unhistorical alterations.

Performance Tips/Difficulty :

These early trios serve as an exceptional pedagogical gateway into Classical chamber music coordination, requiring pristine rhythmic precision, balanced dynamic blending, and clean phrasing. Due to the interchangeable nature of the 'basso' line, ensemble directors and players can flexibly explore these works within smaller violin-and-piano duo combinations without losing structural harmonic integrity.

About Composer :

Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) was the monumental titan universally revered as the 'Father of the Symphony' and 'Father of the String Quartet'. His massive output of 39 piano trios represents a vital evolutionary bridge in late 18th-century chamber music, transforming the genre from simple accompanied keyboard pieces into sophisticated three-way dialogues.

  • Wolfgang Stockmeier (Editor) :
  • Jörg Demus (Fingering Piano) :
