Completed in 1744, The Well-Tempered Clavier, Vol. II is a masterwork of Bach’s later years. Like the first volume, it includes 24 pairs of Preludes and Fugues covering all major and minor keys. Many of the pieces were adapted from earlier works or sketches, exhibiting Bach’s ability to revise and re-contextualize his earlier materials into a cohesive, mature collection.
Unlike Book I, which survives in Bach’s own hand, Book II exists mainly through student copies and manuscripts. This edition reflects careful comparison of these sources, especially those by J. Ch. Altnickol and J. Ph. Kirnberger. Editorial markings are minimal and used only when necessary, preserving the interpretive freedom characteristic of Baroque music.
