Alexander Scriabin (1872–1915) was a student of Taneyev and Arensky. Deeply influenced by Chopin in his early period, he later attempted to incorporate philosophy and religion into his music. This led to the labeling of his later compositions as “mystical” in nature.

This volume represents the first American edition to collect all ten of Scriabin’s sonatas in a single publication. Through the study and performance of this edition, students can gain insight into the evolution of Scriabin’s compositional style. His impact on modern music and early 20th-century Russian composers was significant. The progression of musical language is evident—from the Romantic, Chopinesque Sonata No. 1, Op. 6, to the rhythmically complex and harmonically adventurous Sonata No. 10, Op. 70.
