Description:
The "Romanian Folk Dances" are undoubtedly one of Bartók's most popular compositions. The earliest version was scored for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918. Bartók himself orchestrated this version in 1917. Several other chamber music arrangements (for example, Zoltán Székely's version for violin and piano) were not by Bartók, although he authorized them.
The musical material comes from Bartók's folk music collections, dating back to 1904, when he first noted down a melody sung by a Hungarian peasant girl. Through extensive travels throughout Eastern Europe, Bartók amassed an enormous collection of folk tunes, which by 1918 included 2700 Hungarian, 3500 Romanian, and 3000 Slovak dances and songs. Without Bartók's efforts, many of these tunes would likely have been lost. Some of them made their way into his compositions, such as the "Romanian Folk Dances," inspired by dance tunes Bartók wrote down in Transylvania in 1908.
